Hope & Wonder Hacks

A deliberate interruption.

A pause in self-focus. A practice of preparation for the challenges we all face.

Hope & Wonder Hacks are guided invitations to look outward, in teams, classrooms, and gatherings. Short, shared moments that turn attention toward the hopeful and extraordinary, building a collective sense of hope and possibility before addressing the harder conversations.

What happens when a room full of people turn their focus outward at the same time?
A practice of preparation

Before the agenda. Before the hard conversations.

Most meetings begin with problems. Hope & Wonder Hacks begin somewhere different, with what is moving, inspiring, and astonishing in the world right now. That is not a distraction from the work. It is preparation for it. And the science agrees.

Awe opens up our thinking

Something extraordinary happens when we encounter the vast, the beautiful, or the surprising. We think more clearly, become more creative, and find it easier to see beyond our own fixed positions.

Dacher Keltner (we love this book!)

Wonder gets us out of our own heads

Research shows that moments of awe and wonder quiet the mental chatter that keeps us self-focused. We become more present, more generous, and more open to the people around us.

Awe: The neuroscience of wonder

Hope makes us stronger

Hope is not wishful thinking. Research shows it is one of the most powerful forces for human wellbeing. People with high levels of hope recover more quickly from difficulty and are less defined by what goes wrong.

Hope and meaningful life research
Two ways to practise

Hope or wonder. Choose one. Or let people choose for themselves.

Hope hack

Who or what gives you hope?

Invite your group to name a person, idea, or organisation that gives them hope. Whose work deserves to be known? Whose idea should travel further?

Every person named is a step from individualism toward interdependence.

Wonder hack

What made you say WOW recently?

A piece of music. A breakthrough in science. A conversation overheard. A small, almost-missed moment of awe. Invite your group to name it and let it travel.

When we share what fills us with wonder, we reveal what matters — and invite others to see more expansively.

How a hack works

A group, a prompt, and a few minutes of shared attention.

No special training needed. No complex facilitation.

  1. 1

    Gather your group.

A team, a classroom, a conference room, a community. Any size works.

  2. 2

    Offer one prompt.

Hope or wonder — choose one, or let people choose for themselves.

  3. 3

    Take a moment.

Thirty seconds of silence. Time to consider what you would like to share. Who or what gives you hope? What made you say wow recently?

  4. 4

    Pair up.

Find a partner and share your hope or wonder with each other first. A rehearsal before sharing it on the platform.

  5. 5

    Speak or write.

Scan a QR code or open the app. Speak (up to 60 seconds) or write (up to 250 words). Give it a title, add any web links, and press send. Your Hope & Wonder profile will appear on your organisation or event network page.

  6. 6

    Let it land.

Watch in real time attention offered outward.

What it creates

A different kind of connection.

A culture shaped by what it chooses to amplify. A room that feels slightly more hopeful and expansive than when it arrived.

  • No algorithms— just shared attention
  • No likes— just genuine recognition
  • No comments— just space to be heard
  • No performance— just less self, more wonder

FAQs

Questions people ask about Hacks.

What is a Hope & Wonder Hack?
A short, guided pause. A few minutes of shared attention at the start or end of a meeting, lecture, conference, or gathering. Everyone takes 60 seconds of voice or 250 words of text to share a hope or a wonder, and a branded page fills up with their profiles in real time.
How long does a Hack take?
Ten minutes works well for most groups, sometimes less. It scales comfortably from 5 people to 500. The magic is in the shift of attention, not the length of time.
Do participants need to download an app?
There is an app but it’s not necessary. They scan the QR code on your screen or your slide, record up to 60 seconds or write up to 250 words, and their profile appears on your network page and on their own Hope & Wonder profile.
Do I need to facilitate anything complicated?
No. Offer one prompt. Give the room 30 seconds of silence. Invite pairs to share with each other first. Then open the QR code. That is the whole script.
What if some people aren't comfortable speaking up?
That is completely fine, they can write instead of speak, and the sharing in pairs is private. No one is asked to share in front of the room.
Can we run Hacks regularly?
Absolutely! A recurring moment of outward attention shapes the culture over time. Each Hack adds to the same network page, so the orbit keeps growing.
What do we do with the profiles afterwards?
They are yours and your participants to keep. Individual profiles travel with each person and their profile links can be included on bio’s, email signatures, LinkedIn as a different way of being seen.
Can I run a hack with young people in my class?
Hope & Wonder is intended for individual users aged 16 and over. However we welcome the use of Hope & Wonder Hacks in schools, colleges, and other educational settings for young people over 13, where a teacher, facilitator, or responsible adult oversees the activity. In these contexts the educational organisation takes responsibility for the appropriate safeguarding framework. If you are an educator interested in bringing Hope & Wonder into your school or college please get in touch at info@hopeandwonder.space and we will work with you to make it happen safely and well.
Are there community guidelines?
Yes. Everyone agrees to simple guidelines at sign-up. Our goal is to keep Hope & Wonder a genuine space of hope and wonder. We review anything that falls outside those guidelines with human care and attention.
