I went to see the Painting the French Riviera this morning with my wife. The sun was out and the Royal Academy was beautiful. The first two rooms were full of Monet, Cezanne etc. I was thinking how uninteresting they were. They are the masters but I found them dull and lacking contrast. And they I started walking into other rooms full of people like Raoul Duffy and I started to smile. A room or two later I got to see the work of Nicolas de Stael. And it was wow .. this is sensational. I came away with ideas for my next big oil painting project. We are going to the Royal Festival Hall to sketch. I started oil painting classes two years ago and I love it. Aged 61 I have found my new hobby. I love it. I'd never painted and just makes you realise what we are all capable of doing nearly at any time in life.
