I was recently inspired and given a lot of hope having read the Pope's encyclical on AI. I've never read an encyclical before and to be honest I wasn't really expecting the Pope to wade as heavily into AI as he has done, but it made a fantastic read. Where currently the frontier models are hurtling at great neck speed towards AGI and superintelligence. One of the big challenges is how do we go about making sure that human dignity is at the core? And the Pope looked to address that brilliantly. Some people talk about universal basic income, or universal higher income as it has now been rebranded. But the reality is that work is so much more than just income. Work gives people dignity, respect, a sense of contribution, identity and the ability to use their skills in a way that contributes to society. That I found wonderful to see highlighted.
