I'm reading a book called The Great Conversation by Belden Lane. The way Belden writes about rivers has led to multiple moments of wonder and reflection over the last few days. He describes rivers as the arteries of the land, sustaining the soul of the people. He writes about streams in the Galiuro wilderness in southern Arizona that only flow at night. He writes, during the day, the cottonwoods and willows along their banks function at a metabolic high, pumping water from their roots to the canopy above. Instead of flowing along the ground, the creek is hoisted 100 feet into the air, into the leaves of the trees. But when the sun goes down and the trees stop their work, the creek refills with rising groundwater. Beetles and tiny fish appear. Fireflies gather. A river is reborn, only to disappear.
