Wonder

I have been reading a book called The Great Conversation by Belden Lane. The way he writes about rivers has been inspiring wonder in the last few days. He writes about a stream in the Galliero wilderness in southern Arizona. He writes this. During the day the cottonwoods and willows along the banks function at a metabolic high, pumping water from their roots to the canopy above. Instead of flowing along the ground, the creek is hoisted a hundred feet into the air, into the leaves of the trees. But when the sun goes down and the trees stop their work, the stream refills with rising groundwater. A river is reborn, only to disappear again when the sun rises the next morning and the trees get back to work.
